Welcome to all of the new members. I just wanted to thank those of
you who sent encouraging words for the launch of our site. Extra
thank-yous for those of you who referred new members and put our
button on your bog. If you need help doing that, send me an email.
Enjoy this, our 2nd newsletter, for secular homeschool families and
atheist homeschoolers.
Help AHS Families Make Curriculum Decisions
On the AHS message board there's a discussion of what curriculum
you're using. Discussions like this are often difficult for
Atheist/Agnostic families, because such a majority of homeschoolers
are using religious materials. Please take a moment and visit the
forum to post about your secular curriculum choices (or lack thereof)
I'd also like to see how some families are adapting materials. This is
really a service to other AHS families, I hope you all participate. Some
of the answers I've seen so far are encouraging. If you've already
posted this information elsewhere (like an email group) I can search
for it and post it with your permission, or you can copy & paste it.
Send me an email and I'll send you the "permission slip" to republish.
Much appreciated.
The Lilith Gallery
The Lilith Gallery is a museum in Canada and their website has a
library with a great many resources for teaching the mythology behind
the Bible. We teach biblical mythology in our house as a matter of
cultural literacy. The artwork in the museum pages is quite racy and
some families might find it objectionable. I wouldn't feel comfortable
sharing some of the images with my toddlers, but if my teenage or
adolescent daughters were to catch a glimpse of the site, I expect it
could spark some rather interesting conversations about gender
roles, cultural expectations and media influences.
Do you teach religious mythology in your home? I'm interested to see
what your responses are. Do you see life lessons in mythology, as in
Aesop's fables? Your perspective could help a new homeschooling
family decide how they're going to approach the topic, so feel free to
share your stories on the message forums. One day they'll be hugely
active
Scavenger Hunts for Kids
My kids have been enjoying these printable scavenger hunts. They
have rhyming clues, some have picture clues. You can delete or
rewrite the lines that wouldn't work at your house. You can put a little
treat or toy in each place. I had my 7 yr old take a picture of each
solution, to show she's been there and using my camera was enough
of a treat. I liked them because they caused her to look closely at the
smallest details of the world and inspired her to create her own little
poems personifying inanimate objects, a much better creative writing
exercise than filling in word bubbles over spongebob's head. Enjoy!
Summerhill School
If you've read about the Summerhill School you might enjoy this video
drama on the school. It's by the BBC and not available in the U.S. yet,
except on youtube, which means you have to watch them in numerical
order. I think it would really be beneficial for families who are
de-schooling. I think it would be effective in a family, to take notes on
your thoughts during the film and to use it to challenge your views
about the purpose of education and maybe spark a discussion about
coercive teaching (like my suggestion that you take notes- I
remember things better when I've written them.)
Items of note that I found this week;
Confessions of an Atheist Homeschooler
Deborah at Secular Homeschooling Magazine has created a
humorous quiz to help you discover whether or not you're an
Overachieving Homeschooler
Career opportunity for Atheists (I would add that it's necessary to be
placed into the will to ensure your pet gets what he deserves)
